The park is best known as the burial site of the late President Ziaur Rahman, the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a former President of the country. Over the years, this site has become closely associated with the political legacy of his wife, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in 1981. Following his death, he was buried at Zia Udyan. The park was later developed as a memorial complex, and it remains one of the most visited political landmarks in the capital.
